Golden Boy’s Richard Schaefer has outlined the likely next few fights for WBA champion Amir Khan, a plan which starts with Juan Manuel Marquez and ends with Floyd Mayweather.

The question as to which British welterweight star would get the shot at Marquez has seemingly been answered, with Ricky Hatton wanting a tune up fight before he takes on an always dangerous champion like Marquez.

Supposing Hatton makes a successful comeback against whoever he ends up fighting, a showdown between him and Khan would be difficult for either man to turn down.

Given the passing of the torch sub story and the popularity this would generate in Britain, Golden Boy would probably not mind changing their plans for Khan if the money was right and they were sure he could win fairly easily.

After the Marquez fight, Zab Judah was mentioned as a next target for a next fight, which at this stage of the game should be easy pickings for Khan.

Perhaps most interestingly from Shaefer is the mentioning of a possible fight with Floyd Mayweather down the line. This tells us firstly that Mayweather will presumably still be fighting at that time and isn’t planning on another retirement for the foreseeable future.

The Shane Mosley fight is next on the table for Mayweather, and the contract apparently has a rematch clause at Floyd’s discretion, which he will probably only take if he loses. Mayweather isn’t  overly active either, so after the Mosley fight he might well sit out until Khan is ready to fight him.

Secondly it also tells us that Golden Boy are coming up with contingency plans for Mayweather the same as Top Rank are with Pacquiao. Where Pacquiao will probably get Margarito, Mayweather may well get Khan.

Khan’s teammate and training partner Manny Pacquiao also has plans for Mayweather but given the difficulties the pair faced when negotiating a fight the last time around, this may or may not ever happen. If there are more difficulties in the future, it could be the case that Khan gets to Mayweather before Pacquiao.

Supposing Khan were to beat Mayweather (not likely, but indulge me here) would the pressure then be on Pacquiao to face his friend?

The pair have said in the past that they wouldn’t fight, but supposing events played out with Khan beating Mayweather, talk would undoubtedly turn to the pair facing off.

It would be another Top Rank-Golden Boy negotiation, which are never that easy, but Khan would probably be wasier to make a fight against than Mayweather for Pacquiao and team.

That’s an interesting point Lee, although Mayweather initially said any Top Rank fighter would have to have the extra testing. Mosley is understandable with his past, but I wonder what Mayweather would ask of Khan.

Both having Olympic experience I can’t see Khan being that bothered. By the time it happens though (if it even pans out that way) I have a feeling Mayweather will have dropped the whole extra testing thing.

Scott you ask the wrong question. The real question is: Would Amir Khan expect Mayweather to give him a pass on the random testing he has already commited to maintaining as a condition of all his fights.(Not that Khan would want one) And if Khan test after Mosley has tested, do you see where this is going for Pacquiao and for boxing? How ironic it would be if the most hated man in boxing (unjustfiably so) pioneers the most inportant reform in the history of the sport; despite the haters.

  3. Ghary says:

Amir Khan is good boxer, he can beat Marquez easily like he beat Barrera since he got speed and height. As much as I like him as a fighter, I believe that he is not yet fully ripe. If he face Mayweather or Pacquiao right now he will lose. He needs more ring experience to fight and win the caliber of fighters like Pacquiao and Mayweather. He needs to be patient, his time will come, not just right now. The only thing is that Mayweather and Pacquiao will retire in the next 2 years so, it will be a trade off for him. Will he risk fighting Mayweather now and get that big pay check? He is still young, he can recover from a lost from Mayweather but it will tarnish his record and he will always be remembered as a great champion who lost to an even greater champion in Mayweather or Pacquiao. If I am Khan, I will wait, my time will come and there will always be another boxer/fighter out there who will be my equal and a superfight with this fighter will be my own defining moment to show my own greatness on my own time… My time…

  9. Cabby says:

This is a very interesting scenario. It’s like a boxing incest! Amir went to GBP instead of the more astute and prominent Top Rank Promotions. He is a boxing training partner of Pacquiao. Amir Khan had revealed that he will never fight Pacquiao. One must ask why he chose to fight under GBP? The reason is of course very obvious, i.e., he will always be a second banana to Pacquiao if he had chosen the Top Rank Promotions. He will however become an instant “hot potato” under the de la Hoya team, because the tarnished “golden boy” with the help of Schaefer, will be able to do a lot of business/a lot of moolah coming by petting him with the reest of GBP big names. If what the author of this article ever comes true, then who will Freddie Roach train, Pacquiao or Khan? This is more intriguing. A bull always like the green grass in the pasture.
