Amir Khan has reportedly severed all ties with former promoter Frank Warren and signed with Golden Boy Promotions. Both Top Rank and Golden Boy as well as several others were looking to sign Khan, although Golden Boy probably has the most clout at the moment in his weight class.

Despite speculation, whether or not this will make things difficult between Amir and his teammate Manny Pacquiao is unlikely, Pacquiao of course being signed with the rival Top Rank promotions.

The actions of Golden Boy and Top Rank during the Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations now a distant memory seemingly.

There are several opponents being discussed for Khan next, although his mandatory against Manuel Maidana doesn’t seem to be chief among them. By the looks of things Khan will vacate the title rather than face the hard punching Maidana at this stage, and settle for a bigger money fight against an opponent more suited to his strengths.

Paulie Malignaggi is the name being mentioned on many websites, although his promoter Lou DiBella didn’t sound so keen when speaking to BoxingScene:

“He’s just a British fighter who was knocked out in one round by Breidis Prescott. Why should we be jumping over ourselves for Amir Khan? He beats a guy like Dmitriy Salita but when he’s faced with a real challenge in [Marcos] Maidana, he would rather give up the title. I’m not taking anything away from him. He does have a lot of talent but he has to come over here and earn it like everyone else. He is not Naseem Hamed who came over here with all of extravaganza, the lights and the dancing. He’s just a young fighter. I think he’s talented but he doesn’t walk over here like he’s the star. I hate to break it to him but if he faces Paulie – he is not the A-side. He may be a superstar in England but that doesn’t translate over here. If they continue to treat Paulie like an opponent, the fight won’t happen.”
