Edwin Valero (26-0, 26KO) has been vocal about a fight with undisputed pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao for some time, and will look to get one step closer to his goal when he takes on Antonio De Marco (23-1, 17KO) on Saturday night.

Currently a lightweight champion, Valero would have to climb the ranks if he were to secure a Pacquiao fight, and probably either have to win a title along the way or at least look impressive against decent competition.

The trouble with Valero climbing the ranks though is that his style of boxing would leave him a potentially easy target for the more skilled boxers of the heavier divisions.

His big hitting and often ragged style works well at lightweight because he can cut the ring off well and out punches anyone he comes up against.

Trying that against much bigger men though, some of which might hit harder or be able to take Valero’s best shots without buckling, might well be a recipe for disaster.

Given that Valero has yet to go past the tenth round, predicting how he would react against someone who isn’t going to be knocked out in the first few rounds is difficult at this stage.

After all Valero’s biggest claim to fame at the moment is his record of 26 wins with 26 knockouts, which would probably have to come to an end should he start getting heavier.

There are fighters who have managed the feat in the past, Manny Pacquiao himself is a good example of someone who has maintained his power at increasingly higher weights, but not everyone can do it by any means.

The Pacquiao of today is also a lot more than just a heavy hitter without much in the way of  anything else to back it up. Valero is more comparable to the Pacquiao of old, and would be facing a veritable chasm in the skills department should the two meet.

The bout would be interesting in that Pacquiao has tended to use his speed a lot more as he has climbed the weight classes, and against the similar sized Valero this wouldn’t be as telling as usual.

Also Valero might be the bigger puncher on the night, so long as he does climb the ranks properly and takes time to put the extra size on the right way.

For the time being though, Valero has smaller fish to fry, and needs to look impressive against De Marco if he wants to keep building his name and his hype as a genuine contender to someone like Pacquiao.

A fight against someone like Juan Manuel Marquez might be a good next fight for Valero if he could pull it off, which would have the added benefit of being a fighter Pacquiao struggled with.

There is no doubt i believe that Manny Pacquiao is currently top rated pound per pound in boxing! Many of us used to notice him all over General Santos prior to while he still wasn’t popular, but exactly what concerns most of us is definitely his affiliations with this particular political figures. Boxing wise Manny stands out as a best without doubt but when it comes to picking mates he is poor. Manny is too nice and far too trusting, we observed Manny spending lavish junk to all or any of his personnel who seemed to possibly be simply using him for his financial resources.

  2. I have yet to see valero fight class A fighters the likes of Juan MANUEL MARQUEZ, Campbell, THE DIAZES, Sotto, and then top three of the light weight division of WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO. He hasnt fight anybody worth the impressions he is getting or even to mention he is now ready to fight the number one pound for pound fighter in the world. Has Valero been rated among the top 10 p4p fighter in the world? If not, how can Valero sell a number of PAY-PER-VIEW to convince HBO that he is truly worthy of the demands of a big fight?

This is my comment to EDSOY!

Are you a poser or a PACMAN hater? you didnt accomplish any of pacman’s achievement so you better shut up!

  4. MEGABOTH says:

I think Valero will end his career like the fate of Hatton…Valero should fight worthy boxers before he faces THE GREATEST FIGHTER OF ALL TIME!

Here are some personal advice for pacman:

1.) Ask the NSAC to ban XYLOCAINE not just 1 week before the fight but all the time.
2.) Ask BOB ARUM to help u in #1.
3.) If #1 is done, agree to Mayweather’s demand for a RANDOM DRUG TEST 14 days before the fight (only if #1 is done).
4.) Fight Mayweather in December so that you can rest your tired body after the may election.

Mr. Writer, can you please send this to our “FIGHTER OF THE DECADE’… thanks a lot.

valero is having a day-dream. he should stay at where he is or else his boxing career will end. unless he will hire coach roach to improve his boxing skills, his style will not be effective in heavier weights where more tactical and strong puncher fighters lived. valero is just the “old pacquiao”..a one dimensional, strong puncher boxer…(p.s. valero before dreaming of fighting pacman, try your lack first with marquez, morales, or cotto..and let’s see if you are qualified to fight the pacman)

  7. Anonymous says:

Valero is a rugged fighter and is a very open target for a tactical fighters like Pacqiuao. Even for a counter pucher like Marquez, Valero will be having a hard time because of his style of moving forward putting pressure on the opposite end. I even doubt if he can carry his speed moving to a higher weight.

  8. shin says:

You guys should watch Valero’s video sparring with Morales watch his feet and his movement. Problem is we don’t have anybody that is quicker as Valero to spar with Manny.

Arum should send Shawn Porter to spar with him and hear what he says. Porter is the only person that gives Pacquaio challenge in sparring.

  9. Ghary says:

I give the guy the benefit of the doubt because of his record. I say he needs to fight Ricky Hatton, someone who has the same style, ragid, tough and keeps coming. It will be a good fight. Hatton is still a great fighter even with his lost to Pacquiao. Pacquiao was just the wrong fight for him. If Valero beats Hatton with a K/O then I say he deserves a shot at Pacquiao at 140lbs.

  10. Suntok (Punch) says:

Valero’s record is impressive, but I don’t know if he really fought skilled fighters. Also can Valero move to the Welterweight division? If ever Pacquiao wins over Clottey I think the next step of Pacquiao is to fight the winner of the Mosley-Mayweather bout. If Valero will get lucky he would be getting a fight with Pacquiao in 2011. Nevertheless, we really can’t say who will win but it would all defend on SKILLS in the WELTERWEIGHT division. Regards to all.
