Floyd wants it both ways, big money and easy opponents

The latest from the Mayweather vs. Mosley bout is that Floyd is apparently not all that eager to put his perfect record on the line for the $10 million or so he will make from the fight. Sources within Floyd’s camp are saying that he is a little underwhelmed at the prospect of fighting for a quarter of what he would have made against Manny Pacquiao.

Far from being the proverbial carrot on a stick, Shane Mosley doesn’t fit in with any of Floyd’s usual recent criteria for an opponent. He’s the bigger and stronger man, he’s still at the peak of his powers, and perhaps most annoyingly he doesn’t have a recklessly aggressive style Floyd can counter easily.

It might even be the case that Mosley can take Mayweather’s best punches and keep coming forward, throwing his timing off and trapping him against the ropes and corners.

By his own terms though he got the better end of the fallout between himself and Pacquiao, Mosley is ranked higher and a bigger pay per view draw in the United States than Manny’s next opponent. Joshua Clottey is relatively unknown outside most boxing circles, and Ghana is hardly prime pay per view country.

Mosley himself isn’t a huge draw, but hes certainly a lot bigger than Clottey. Mayweather claims to be a bigger star than Pacquiao anyway (which is debatable, but not outside the realms of possibility) , so opponents shouldn’t matter anyway.

The delays over the Mosley fight seem to be Floyd wanting it both ways, an easy opponent and massive pay per view sales. He might have pulled that little trick against Juan Manuel Marquez, who was undersized from the start, but he can’t do the same thing here.

He either has to bite the bullet and face someone difficult and who presents a challenge to him and make the bigger money, or take an easier fight and settle for less.

Mayweather not being satisfied with the selling power of Mosley is a little redundant anyway because at this weight and this time, Mosley is probably the best fight Mayweather could have gotten.

Hatton and De La Hoya were both huge sellers but have now retired, many of the emerging stars are still unknown and others have retired or moved over. Cotto is now up in super welterweight, Berto is busy in Haiti for the next few months and after them comes Clottey, who is already fighting.

Barring another light welterweight moving up, there is simply no-one better for Mayweather to fight. Ricky Hatton came up to fight Floyd because he was dominant at light welter, but with him now semi retired, the division is suddenly alive with stars who can get by well enough without facing a bigger opponent like Mayweather.

A major concern for Mayweather aside from the difficulty of the fight is probably the fact that if he sells less pay per views than Pacquiao and Clottey for his next fight, whoever the opponent is, he will lose bargaining power for a fight against Pacquiao in the future.

Pacquiao and Clottey should sell well given the national press attention the fight has received. The fact that the Cowboys stadium is being used will also boost this, particularly in the United States.

Mayweather alone can sell over a million, and with Mosley as his opponent, he can realistically expect even more than this. Whether this will be enough to counter ‘the show’ though will probably be a major factor in whether Manny and Floyd will ever meet in the ring.

no way mayweather will fight valero!
no way will he fight mosley either. He will retire prematurely, as he is offered an endorsement contract by KFC. He will be the most appropriate KFC endorser…”they do chicken right”. Mayweather is the perfect chicken.

  2. Boxing Fan says:

“It seems patently obvious to me that Floyd and his minions killed the Pacquiao fight. The bottom line is that the fight was basically a done deal before they decided to inject the demands for blood testing into the picture. Pure and simple, Golden Boy and Floyd and his advisers created the problem, and it ended up killing the fight.”

    -Al Bernstein, Showtime Boxing Analyst

“Mayweather shouldn’t be making accusations without a shred of proof as he tries to discredit all of Pacquiao’s great accomplishments, nor should he
try to circumvent the Nevada rules by asking for blood tests when the commission has never asked for them.”

    - Dan Rafael from ESPN

“There were times during the past month when the conduct of Team Mayweather had the look of an effort to sabotage the fight. A negotiator who wants to make a deal doesn’t go out of his way to antagonize and publicly embarrass the other side. But that’s what the Mayweathers and Golden Boy did.”

    - Thomas Hauser, MaxBoxing.com

“I don’t see any reason of accusing Manny of using illegal drugs in our fight.”

    - Jim Strickland, David Diaz’s Manager/Trainer/retired licensed
    pharmacist

“I don’t think Manny is on anything. He’s just on top of his game right now.”

    - Timothy Bradley, WBO/WBC Jr. Welterweight Champion

“Who is Mayweather to ask for the tests? Why didn’t he ask Marquez? Manny’s not on ‘roids.”

    -James Toney, Multi division Champion

“I think it fell apart because basically Mayweather never wanted to fight Pacquiao. He wants to continue and fight guys he can beat and fool the public.

    - Mike Silver, noted Boxing Historian

“Hell naw. Why change the rules on me? Because I’m coming up in weight means I’m doing steroids? They’re giving you a test for that anyway. It would be something that would aggravate me because then after I beat you, I was on something, don’t play with me. Either you want to fight or you don’t want to fight.”

    - Roy Jones, Jr.

  3. colby says:

Only those stupid fans of POULTRY BOY FLOYD are willing to watch him fight cherry picked opponent.Meanwhile, they would have to eat their hearts out coz tickets to PACQUIAO-CLOTTEY fight were selling like hot cake.

  4. JM(CANADA) says:

the reason why floyd will have a huge ppv bcoz everyone loves to see floyd defeated and shut his fkn big mouth….

  5. Wayne Lord says:

I was going to insist that Fraud grow some balls and fight a real welter. Then I remembered that chickens have no balls. It’s like the ex Iraq war vet who applied for a job at the post office. When asked if he had any allergies or disabilities he said, he lost his nuts in Iraq and was also allergic to coffee and tea.
HR offered him the job and sid he could start on Monday. everybody starts at 5 but he could start at 7. When he asked why HR said, well for the 1st 2 hours we all drink tea/coffee and scratch our nuts!
Poultry Boy Fraud is still searching for his nuts that is why he still has not faced a welter after five yrs in that division. That boy has ducked so many top fighters that Thomas Hauser says when he opens his mouth we expect to hear quacks!I like to refer to him as a featherweight because what is the make up of ducks and chickens? Feathers! And does he fight anyone in his division? No! If he could he would clean out the featherweights the way he has the lightweights. But he is doing that while he is a welter!

  6. pinoy4ever says:

gayweather just take ur panties off and fight like a man!!!!or u can fight another homo oscar delahoya in a bikini thong jello boxing….LOL…LOL…LOL

  7. Mayweather Vs Kahn! says:

And who can sell a fight with their mouth like the Mayweather and Roach? Nobody!

  8. Mayweather Vs Kahn! says:

Amir Kahn is known to overpower Pacman in their sparing session at times…but he is still wet behind the ears not like the vet Mosley. Easy pickins for the cherry picker Pretty Boy.

  9. Mayweather Vs Kahn! says:

And the Mayweather clan will get a shot at Roach’s other superstar…

  10. Mayweather Vs Kahn! says:

Kahn has a suspect Chin and now fights for Golden Boy. It would be a knife in the back for Mosley again, but that’s how Mayweather and Golden Boy rolls!

  11. Wayne Lord says:

Poultry Boy Fraud (PBF) still has not signed to fight Mosley but I see exactly how excited his blind fans have become. For years former fans like me and never fans, have wanted to see him step up and face a live top five welter. He has whetted his blind fans’ appetite by only mentioning Mosley’s name and suddenly, suddenly, they are saying: see, he is not a Peking Ducker. He is facing Mosley and Manny would not.
Excusez-moi!!! Manny has been at 130 and under for the prior 4-6 years. He has only recently moved up because he was called out by bigger guys. Conversely, Poultry Boy Fraud has been a welter for years and his name is the only one absent from the elite welter list who have all fought each other 1 or more times: Margarito, Quintana Williams, Clottey, Cintron, Mosley and Cotto.
Speaking about calling out fighters. Boxing’s history is filled with guys calling out each other but then failing to actually agree to terms. Or saying they whipped the other guy in sparring and got kicked out. No one knows for sure who is correct in each case and generally we eagerly await an actual meeting to settle the issue.
But when a guy actually crashes your party on national TV and calls you a Howard The Duck, you gotta fight him. That is the most direct challenge ever. What did Poultry Boy Fraud do? Nothing! And as we debate…still nothing. The self proclaimed G.O.A.F (greatest of all frauds), looked spooked and scared and did NADA!
Suddenly an Act of God occurs in Haiti and the Mosley fight is cancelled. So to tease and titillate us but more to steal thunder from Manny he flirts with facing Mosley. Like I said,he will find a way not to make this match cuz in his chicken heart, he will never face a tough boxer! When Manny signed to face Clottey he was the toughest guy available at the time. There was not a huge window open to make a fight on short notice. Clottey, a huge welter was training for a December fight which got cancelled. So he agreed to the match. In case you lived under a rock or just got back from Mars, Manny has elections in May. He also was injured in his last fight!
Oh and that was the reason Poultry Boy insisted on March 13th. Manny by the way does not run away from the tough fights. He does not go brag or pretend to call a guy out. He lets his promoter make it and he just fights them. How unique is that? A guy who will fight the best and on short notice.
And to address the enigma of Poultry Boy. He has a target on his back because of his 0 not because he is exciting. He is very exciting on 24/7 but boring in real fights. Without a decent dance partner he will not draw flies to see him sh-it!
I used to love him at 130 and maybe also at 135 but since then he has become a boring cherry picker. He is KFC’s most wanted because he is prime chicken. Everybody wants to be the one to erase that 0 but he keeps hopping away like the chicken he is.
Until he gets in the ring with Mosley and the fight really begins we can expect to see chicken fingers defend his feather-weight title against lighter, older hasbeens.
I repeat, he will never fight a top 5 welter because he is afraid of being plucked. Yes plucked and losing his dignity like that rooster from Bugsbunny!

  12. Floyd is a Loser says:

I dont think this mayweather – mosley fight will push thought, KFC doesnt even fight Cotto because of the reason that Cotto lives in Argentina. Is it really that far Floyd?

  13. MAROC says:

gayfloyd knew he isn’t cashcow anymore, but still using money as a reason not to fight shane, alleging that mosley doesn’t bring in money to the proposed fight. it is just another excuse. the fact is…HE IS AFRAID TO LOSS HIS “0″.

  14. salsa nigger says:

    K F C=gayweather

  15. martial arts bobby says:

i have to agree with “box-fan” comment. On that Mayweather-Marquez tussle, there were a lot of Latinos ,mostly Mexicans, who want Marquez to knock the arrogant Floyd.Floyd was really insulting Marquez concerning the “pee” incident. But whatever happened on the weigh in and Marquez just acquiesced was beyond my imagination. And the decline for a fight night weigh in by HBO was somewhat suspect.

  16. Gary S. says:

The ” money ” days of Floyd is over. As in done, finished, ” tapos “. In fact the whole Mayweather family is beginning to become the real ” plague ” in boxing, along with De la Hoyas Schaefer, Hammon and Teddy Atlas.A lot of boxing fans are sick of them.

  20. rays says:

    can’t blame him.
so much in love for his fake glory.
and many believes in him so…

  21. kiko says:

    hahahahahahahaha

  22. Unknown says:

He is going to fight an unknown from one of the big buying countries (England, Puerto Rico, Mexico). Mayweather (Along with HBO with 24/7) will majorly hype the kid up to be THE NEXT BEST THING IN BOXING and the MOST DANGEROUS BOXER NOT DISCOVERED YET.

People fall for the hype, and buy the fight thinking its going to be a good show. Fight night comes and Mayweather puts on a clinic ala Marquez. Mayweather then points at his million buys and then to his undefeated record and say he’s the man in boxing.

  23. jonas says:

Mayweather will ducked Mosley as usual, high risk, low reward for COWARD Mayweather. Mayweather will call out Juan Ma Lopez, a guy who can bring pueto rican fans. Someone’s “0″ has got to go. Mayweather vs Juan Ma Lopez…hahahahaha!!!! This is serious…hahahahaha!! not a joke…hahahahaha…

  24. box-fan says:

the reason mayweather-marquez reach 1m ppv is bec. many mexican and boxing fans want to see marquez ktfo of mayweather which ofcourse didn’t happen.

  25. Edfel says:

I think Mayweather should fight Tamara who just won over Brian Veloria for sure Mayweather will win and Tamara is Bantamweight champion so this guy might do wonder in the ppv. lol

  26. pranzer says:

Marquez made a huge contribution going into the 1 million PPV buys. The other factor being several varying promos offered by GBP which nominally reduced the PPV rate down from 50$ to maybe 45$.

  27. Black American Pacman fan says:

The fighter Mayweather has to face is still in high school, maybe middle school. Theres no one out there right now that can satisfy his requirements. He really screwed it up for himself when he demanded from Pacquiao those ridiculous tests. That group, GBP & the Mayweathers, can’t think that far ahead in the future, which is not surprising. The reason? They underestimated the intelligence and the simple honesty of Manny, and that in itself, is more powerful that all the smoke and mirrors and bull crap that Mayweathers’ camp can ever muster.

  28. rfn109 says:

Told you so… it would never happen. Stop beleiving in Mayweather, he thinks he’s in a circus.

  29. perry ayos says:

The truth is Mayweather gets a decent number through his dancing partners as in de la Hoya,Hatton and Marquez and majority of them wanted to see Floyd gets chop up like a Peking duck.

  30. DelTorro says:

I disagree on what you said about Floyd making a million PPV buys by himself, what do you think of Marquez, a fighter who cant even make 200 PPV buys? are you disregarding the mexican viewers?

  31. benpung says:

Mayweather is simply preserving his ZERO loss (his ticket to the Hall of fame), as he is always ducking the tough fights…
Mayweather can fight VALERO (he is undefeated and is approximate to the punching power of Manny Pacquiao).
