How Clottey’s training struggles might impact Pacquiao’s future fights

Bob Arum has said that Manny Pacquiao is ready to fight already, several weeks out from his March 13th date with Joshua Clottey.
Freddie Roach countered this by saying that he was still a few weeks away in terms of complete preparations, but that he is in good shape already.
At the same time though there are several reports which suggest that Clottey’s training isn’t going so well, mainly because his trainer was denied entrance to the United States.
Visa’s can be denied for all manner of reasons, although are usually a result of either incorrect paperwork or some kind of criminal record or incident when last in the States.
Clottey’s trainers problems aren’t being made public, and in fact the reasons for a Visa being denied are not always even shared fully with the person applying for one, but at this stage it doesn’t look like he will be there for the majority of Clottey’s training.
You might think that this is great news for Pacquiao, and that he should have an even bigger advantage against Clottey than many are already giving him.
In actual fact though this is probably bad news for all concerned because if enough people think that the fight will be one sided, then the pay per view figures could be affected.
As fun as it might be watching a one sided beating due to skill, it isn’t that much fun when one guy is clearly not in shape.
Clottey, who has a tendency for spells of inactivity within fights anyway, needs to be on top of his game against someone like Pacquiao who won’t stop coming so long as he’s conscious.
Normally this wouldn’t be that much of a problem, and a few hundred thousand people buying or not buying is simply an inconvenience and a few million less dollars in the pockets of each fighter.
This time out though Pacquiao will be looking to draw every buyer he can so that future negotiations with Floyd Mayweather are kept on an even footing.
The last time out the drug testing issue was what stopped the fight being made, and the purse split was agreed fairly quickly at 50/50 for each fighter.
As first reported by my Examiner cohort Michael Marley though, this agreement will be blown out of the water unless both Pacquiao and Mayweather do similar numbers in pay per view sales against Clottey and Shane Mosley in the coming months.
IF either fighter sells substantially more than the other, then they will claim to be the bigger star, and no doubt demand a bigger share of the purse than 50%.
As it stands, Mosley is a much bigger star than Clottey to begin with, and Pacquiao isn’t known for hyping fights up with lots of trash talk and attention grabbing. Perhaps not the most genuine means of selling a fight, but it works either way.
That looked to have been equaled out by way of the Cowboys stadium and all the extra media attention that the fight was given because of the venue, although this now might not be enough.
If the casual fans are deciding which pay per view to buy and have a choice between Pacquiao beating a guy who didn’t even train properly and Mayweather finally fighting a top welterweight who has a decent chance of beating him, then a lot of them will buy Floyd rather than Manny.
There are fans of either who will want to watch their guy and fans who will just watch both, but if Mayweather can convince enough of the people that his fight will be more competitive, then he might well win the ratings war.
Top Rank needs to send some of their fleet of lawyers to get Clottey’s trainer into the country quickly, or at least get Joshua’s head on straight and make sure he’s training to give it his all.

For those fans or allies of Mr. Mayweather, please do not in incognito make some conclusions that tend to condition the mind of the boxing fans all over the world, that: “in case Pacman wins, it is because Clottey was not properly trained”. And so, you will again proclaimed that Mayweather is the better boxer than Clottey. Personally, I believe that Floyd, as a boxer is not even in the league of legitimate welterweights, like Pacman. He is a sham boxer with so many alibis, and a full-proof coward.
I somewhat agree with some of the writer’s points. However, I believe Pac-Clottey will do a lot better than most people believe despite the potential Mayweather-Mosley fight simply because Pac always delivers an exciting bang for your buck fight. Clottey is a game fighter with size and power and the possibility of upsetting Pac, although a small one. People will buy it just on the intrigue of that. On the other hand, Mayweather’s boring fights have left a sour taste in a lot of boxing fans pockets. Even though most people may want to see Mosley knock Froid out, I don’t think they will really slap down the money for it and will wait to see the ESPN highlights or replay on HBO the following weekend. Froid did it to himself and has already lost a significant amount of boxing fans’ respect with his, and his family’s, antics.
Clottey is a boxer with a ton of hearts the way he fought margarito with an injured hand wow!!! he really is a warrior I thought he won over cotto, only that unexpected knockdown who made him lost but the whole fight was for clottey it only shows that this fight is one hell of bloody war but the ending will be a TKO FOR PAQUIAO @ RND10

name-recognition-wise, pbf-mosley will do better than pac-clottey. if pac-clottey reaches 1million, i think 50-50 is still fair. but i doubt it. i put it at 700k. some are estimating pbf-mosley to be about 1.5million. clottey is no cotto. can pacquiao carry the PPV numbers by himself? it remains to be seen.

I will always watch Manny’s fight because he is an exciting fighter. And he never fought a boring fighter that’s why Roach turned down Malignaggi. The only boring fighter I think Manny will fight after Clottey is Floyd Jr. but Manny will do something to make it more exciting. Floyd will be suffering from his devastating knock-out from left uppercut followed by right hook from Pac-man. Go Manny!!!!

First of all it was Clottey who declares first while he was still in Ghana that said he is ready to fight even today but he just need his coach there with him in the ring. Secondly, you are a professional boxer you should always be ready-and don’t give me this excuses already before the fight even starts.
It’s no ones fault but Clottey and his people for not getting ready. In addition, it is not Arum job or responsibility to get their Visa’s. Arum’s job is to promote Clottey.

Manny and Clottey will do far better than Mosley/Mayweather because simply the fight on May 1 will never happen. Floyd is an egotistical maniac doing the manipulating to the amazement of boxing fans of how he would think of a way not to fight Mosley.
He signed the contract simply to satisfy the negotiations but in the end, GBP and his cohorts will find it hard to believe that it did not happen at all. I wish I am wrong on this come May 1 because I really wanted the winner to face Pac for the ultimate showdown.
More people will buy Mosley-Mayweather PPV. Why? It’s because they want to wit ness just how Mosley will send Floyd crashing on the canvass. That’s what these people want to see, the taming and humbling of an Ape.

The article’s premise is that the FMj-Mosley fight will be bigger than the Pacman-Clottey and that itself is already a “victory” for Floyd jr.I agree with you sir. in a way.As the article suggests that Clottey is a no factor in the PPV contest, leaves us just the Pacman who will have all the credit for the numbers. Assuming that FMJ-SSM fight generated 1 million ppv buys and Pacman managed only half of that will put the latter in a no bargaining position if ever they ( FMJ-Pac )negotiate again, this time i have to disagree.Bringing in the Mosley factor will negate the number advantage of FMJ as they will have to share the credit i.e. 1M buys divided by 2 gives you exactly what the Pacman has.What if Pac-Clottey raked in 700 or 800K? My point is, all these arguments about an aborted fight that people wnat to see is all hype.True boxing fans just want to hear the sound of the first bell if ever they fight.

About PPV Sales, the outcome of Mayweather-Mosley and Pacquiao-Clottey bouts must not affect possible future purse split between Pac & Floyd, adding that both men come out winners from their incoming fights and both men agree to fight. The share must still remain 50-50 whatever the outcome of the PPV sales of those fights. It must be expected that the Mayweather-Mosley tango will get better PPV sales as both men are Americans and commanding most of the better income American local audiences. What PPV sales turnout do we expect from the Philippines and Ghana? Of course, PPV sales will be decided by global wide market, however we cannot deny that figures are affected by income stature of buying audiences.

It’s bad news indeed! I for one would certainly see it on PPV but a less exciting match would surely make me feel like it’s not worth paying to view the fight. One thing for sure tho, it’ll be better than Floyd-Sugar since Floyd’s only gonna start running a marathon in the ring!
