Multiple weight boxing champion James Toney has been pushing for a UFC fight recently for some reason. I say some reason because he currently has no experience with mixed martial arts and can almost certainly still make more money in boxing.

Still, Toney seems adamant about taking his skills to the cage in some form or another and isn’t going to let things like rejection from the UFC deter him. In actual fact he was offered a fight contract if some kind, but considered it to be an insult apparently.

While Toney might be under the misconception that MMA fighters make as much as boxers, only the very top of each weight division can expect to make anything approaching millions for each fight, and that’s usually with a pay per view cut worked into the mix as well.

I for one would welcome the sight of Toney in the UFC, if only to see him fight a few stand up fighters. He would match up very well with Kimbo Slice for example, but against wrestlers or anyone with any kind of ground game, he would quickly be out of his depth.

The problem is almost certainly that he would beat Kimbo Slice very easily in MMA, and Kimbo is a huge draw for the UFC. A loss to Toney would almost certainly lose a lot of the appeal that Kimbo Slice brings with him, especially since Toney would probably knock him out rather than submitting him.

Some might say a one dimensional boxer has no place in MMA, but Toney does claim he has some kind of experience on the ground. Perhaps more importantly he has the charisma and quick fire trash talking that could make him a big draw for the UFC. Also of course being a professional boxer and now having ever been stopped in over 80 fights, Toney would be capable of a lot of spectacular knockouts against the right kind of opponent.
