Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather are by all accounts making steady progress toward a showdown in May, with one of the major stipulations being extra testing from Mayweather. After the rather drawn out talks with Manny Pacquiao fell apart due to a similar issue, Mayweather and his team said after the event that all his future opponents would be required to undergo extra testing in order to face him.
Where this paranoia about performance enhancing drugs was for his first 40, yes 40 fights I’m not sure, but it isn’t as if Floyd has become a big star all of a sudden. He’s been at the top of the tree for several years now, and this extra testing wasn’t an issue then. Maybe Floyd really does think that everyone is on some kind of performance enhancer, and perhaps he just wants a built in excuse not to take any fight he doesn’t like the look of.
Shane Mosley has been looking for this fight for a number of years now, truth be told both fighters have wanted this fight at various points in their careers. Floyd was the hungry young fighter eager to take on the big names at one point, and Shane Mosley now finds himself looking to grab the coattails of Floyd’s success and big name. Although both claim they were ducked by the other, the main issue in the past has been timing, with Mosley being a weight division higher for the majority of either fighter’s careers.
Whether it was knowingly or not, it does appear that Mosley was taking some kind of steroids in the past, which he has admitted under oath during the Balco scandal. It might then be forgivable for Mayweather to ask for extra testing in this case given his opponents history. But to say that every single opponent he ever faces will now need to take extra and often invasive tests is sure to cut down the competition that will want to face him. Not because that many people are on performance enhancing drugs, but because they wont want Mayweather controlling the terms of the fight and acting as some kind of out of control one man athletic commission.
I can understand in Mosley’s case why he wants to take the extra testing, which for him is probably more about proving his own good name than giving in to the tetched ramblings of Mayweather. To Mosley, the extra tests are another way of putting the Balco scandal further behind him and regaining some of the credibility he may have lost when the story broke.
It doesn’t matter really to either party that there are plenty of designer steroids and illegal supplements that are impossible to test with current testing, or that Floyd Mayweather might still be using the widely banned Xylocane to numb his often broken hands before a fight. In boxing appearances are everything and often the truth can take a back seat so long as both parties are getting what they want.
So is Floyd right to want extra testing against Mosley?
Perhaps, although Mosley assures everyone that he never knowingly took anything illegal, the point remains that he did still take it without looking into what it was. That doesn’t mean that everyone Floyd faces should be placed under the same kind of scrutiny though, and for any opponents who haven’t admitted to PED use under oath, extra testing remains a farce and another troubling development for Boxing as a whole.

No, Floyd does’nt ‘think everyone is on some kind of performance enhancer’ he thinks Manny is on it and so do other boxing insiders. Of course you have to be careful about what you say when you can’t prove it; but you dam sure have the right to protect yourself against it.
I’d considered myself one of Floyd Mayweathers’ BIGGEST fan but after he “DUCKed” Pacquiao by making it hard and had him jumping threw hoops, which he didn’t have to before any other fight lost that match up. Now he is going to face Sugar Shane Moseley who will cut off the ring and beat Mayweather by TKO.
frank c,
So you are saying Pacquiao walked away from the fight with Mayweather out of spite? How many reasons are you guys going to come up with? Why don’t you make your lives easier and just ask Pacquiao to tell you why he won’t take the blood tests?
@hardnox
i don’t see it as pacquiao walking away from $40m, i see it as pacquiao taking floyd’s $40m and throwing it down the drain. so, now floyd has to fight a few more times to get his $40m back. He may even lose for less than $20m if he takes on mosley.
The title should read Scott Heritage is still on Floyd Mayweathers dick! This guy cannot utter a sentence w/o using Floyd’s name. Scott why is it that Floyd calls the shots, it is because of reporters like you and all of these half-assed fans in the sport. If you have no concern over Floyd why is his every move chronicled to the second. Pac-Clottey is a MAJOR fight now right? Re port on that shit ohh I forgot nobody gives a fuck, so a wannabe journalist with very biased views takes the nread-winner the main attraction the big ticket attraction and attempts to build his own career off of it. Your technique is sooo played, it is nice to see that you have read up and gotten some of your facts straight but still over all piss poor journalism.
If Floyd really want to include this blood test shit in every fighter who would like to challenge him, I don’t think anyone will be willing to fight him anymore instead why don’t we fight Pacman who will be a good catch for any fighter like Clottey now. And at the end of the day if nobody will fight Floyd who will be the loser?
Xeliumnigatum,
You can sugar coat it all you want, but the fact of the matter is that Pacquiao walked way from $40 million and possibly the biggest boxing match in history just because of a simple blood test.
I smell something is cooking is it a DUCK or CHICKEN or Both
For the record: Pacquiao DID NOT REJECT the blood testing that PBF wants he ACCEPTS it but blood must be drawn 24 days before the fight…so I am not sure where this people(Hardnox) with chicken brain got this information…My Advice to you READ and UNDERSTAND before you accuse someone
If shane mosley can agree to random blood testing (and am sure it’s true for many other boxers), then what is so special about Pacquiao?
We still don’t know why the guy won’t take the test.
Scott it make sense!
Floyd is a joke to me. He is one of the most gifted fighters of the last thirty years but his heart is not like Mosley, Goldy, Vargas, Trinidad,,,get my point. I was a fan years ago before he said he would beat Leonard. That was it for me. Leonard, Jones, Meldrick Taylor, 135 pound Mosley, and Whittaker would have beat him.
Watch the next Disney sequel this year:
Starring: Floyd “The Mighty Duck” Mayweather – The No 1 Pound for Pound “DUCKER of all time”
co-Starring: Shane “The Mighty Mouse” Moseley – The EPO Man
Up to now Floyd has not given a statement on this Xylocaine issue..That’s a sure sign of guilt that he’s still on it.He admitted it before on HBO..Since he is now pretending to be the cleanest in the sport by demanding that every fighter he will face undergo random tests, may I suggest that we boxing fans DEMAND that every Mayweather fight should also have random tests for ANAESTHETICS like Xylocaine and other numbing agents..after all, Floyd wants a COMPLETELY DRUG-FREE FIGHT..doesn’t he?
