Bob Arum said today that disgraced star Antonio Margarito is being considered for Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent. The first hurdle to Margarito stepping back into the ring against anyone is whether or not he can regain his license after being caught with loaded gloves against Shane Mosley.

At the time he claimed innocence and Top Rank backed him up, but it seems a little unlikely to me he could have been fighting with plaster in his gloves and not known about it. The controversy also calls into question Margarito’s record in the past particularly for the likes of Kermit Cintron and Miguel Cotto. Cintron has two losses on an otherwise perfect record, both from Margarito which are now looking dubious. For all intents and purposes he might well have been undefeated still if not for Margarito and his cheating. Miguel Cotto has not looked the same since the beating he took at the hands of Margarito a little over two years ago, and similarly might have been undefeated (other than his most recent bout against Pacquiao) if not for a somewhat tainted bout against Margarito.

Of course Margarito and his trainer were quick to say that this was the first time this had happened, but it seems unlikely. At the time Shane Mosley was thought by many to be getting past his best and not a paticularly difficult match for the Mexican, why then choose this fight to cheat in?

The air is thick with hypocrisy at Top Rank at the moment anyway because of the fact that when a similar incident happened to a Bob Arum fighter in the past, he demanded that the cheating fighter be banned for life from the ring. The circumstances were a little different, ‘Panama’ Lewis removed padding from the gloves rather than loading them with plaster, but the overall effect is much the same. The actions of Lewis and Luis Resto might have eventually lead to the death of a promising young fighter, but the same thing could easily have happened because of Margarito as well.

Can Arum in all good conscience consider Margarito for a shot against Pacquiao, guaranteeing him to make millions of dollars in the process, after the careers he might have ruined or affected with his gloves, which for all anyone knows, might have been loaded since his very first fight?

Arum like most promoters is affected differently by things when his money is on the line, and Margarito can still make him millions of dollars cheat or otherwise. But will the humble and affable Pacquiao want to know he’s making a known cheater a lot of money through his name alone?

Surely not, Pacquiao knows what it’s like to be have his reputation tarnished by unfounded accusations of cheating, and to help someone who has knowingly cheated in the past is something his conscience wouldn’t allow him to do, not when that cheating has probably robbed others of the chance to earn big money and accolades by doing things the right way.

  3. Pacquiao-Clottey is just a tune up fight, Pacquiao-Mayweather is still the fight all fans want to see…

The question still remains, will Mayweather steps up to the challenge now that Berto pulled out? He should have agreed to fight Mosley by now.

Pacquiao now starts doing his thing, Floyd better starts doing his… Check out Pacquiao-Mayweather latest news – thegreatestfight.com

Its all promo pitch for Margarito associating his name with Pacman.
Mosley defeated him, Pac will defeat Mosley so what.
JMM is no longer at par with Pac.
Pac does not want to take Foreman’s belt for decency’s sake. Let the guy enjoy it.

  5. Yes Yo! says:

Margarito is still a big welterweight and is a handful and dangerous opponent for any fighter, even without loaded gloves on. I would still pay to watch Manny fight him, if that fight can be made, because that is still a good action fight. Also, it is interesting to see, on the one hand, how Margarito will perform now that we are sure his gloves will not be loaded, and on the other, how will Manny do against the biggest welterweight he will face in his life with tremendous power and high work rate So, if the fight can be made, why not. I’ll gladly pay to see it.

  6. rene says:

And the real Main event Cotto vs Margarito
on January. Who is the real winner ?
Forget about Gayweather he is trying to shrink himself to fight in the lightweight or featherweight division.

  7. rene says:

Pacquiao vs Margarito in July or August,
and Pacquiao vs Mosley in Late November
or Early December. What a Schedule for Boxing forget about Gayweather.

  8. PowerFIST says:

Margarito cannot claim innocence on this or perhaps throw the spotlight on his trainer who may be responsible for the terrible deed of loaded hand wraps; he was always there.

We hate to see a good fighter, a top welterweight at that, go out without the count. For Margo to improve on his tarnished reputation, he should do it the hard but honest way.

We all believe in second chance, the fact he’s only suspended not banned for life. Arum should include him in the Pacquiao lottery for a shot at redemption before the latter retires.

  9. Bob Arum says:

Both fighters are on my stable, Pacman’s last fight, more money for everyone and less b/s…………..beside, Pacman hold 7 belts title and can retire as a boxing legend. Why give Floyd Jr opportunity to make a-lot of money.

  10. drei says:

i think the FIGHT with CLOttey is a good one. CLOTTEY gave MArgarito a hard time. as a big pacfan, the margarito fight myt be a little too much for pac. but it will be a very interesting fight. margo may have the reach advantage and height, but pac got the speed, power, and ring generalship. its another slap in the face to FLOYD coz im seeing a pattern here. ARUM is lining up BIG MONSTER WELTERWEIGHTS whom FLOYD has ducked for the past 5 yrs. COTTO, now CLOTTEY, maybe MARGARITO or MOSLEY.. PAC will show that he will fight the best fighters out there.

  11. kaliwete579 says:

Lesson was learned, time to move on. It happened. Margarito deserves 2nd chance. I just want to him fight again and see if he could stand a fair fight against Pacman. He maybe big….But small size difference would not matter to the P4P king, wouldn’t it?

  12. Ghary says:

I’ve been calling for this Match-up after Mayweather vs Pacquiao fell apart. We all knew Margarito cheated and he learned his lesson from his 1 year suspension. I’m sure he won’t do it again.

If we all like action pack fight, this has fireworks all over it. Both men are capable of winning the fight it will put us on the edge of our seats all throughout the fight… Not like Pacquiao vs Mayweather, you can sleep for the first 10 rounds and maybe, just maybe something might happen on the 11 or 12 rounds… I won’t pay a cent to watch Pacquiao vs Mayweather but surely, I will pay to watch Pacquiao vs Margarito.

Everyone needs a second chance, even the people that cheats… Whoever thinks Margarito should never fight anymore, I say put yourselves in his shoes. To those people who believes they never cheated or will never cheat in their whole life, I say you are all worst than the person that cheated. Everyone needs a second chance and Pacquiao is more than willing to give it to him….

  13. Kid Dynamite says:

A fight between Pacquiao & Margarito would be interesting indeed but I doubt Freddie Roach would allow that to happen. Margarito is considered a big welterweight & might be too much for Pacquiao to handle. But for the right kind of money, Pacquiao just might take it. Who would win? As big a Pacquiao fan as I am, I’m sorry to say but I think Margarito might be too much for him.

  14. stephon wade says:

this is indeed a nice point of view. i agree with you.

  15. Tito says:

That will be an entertaining fight. Much better than a pacquiao-mayweather. Of course the angle that bob will be pushing for is for pacquiao to punish the guilty cheater.

  16. Moty says:

It really doesnt matter on margarito’s cheating. Cmon, it was clear cotto was outclassed during that fight. On margarito vs pacman, it still doesnt matter coz speed and power still kill….even if opponents use ped’s or stuffed gloves

  17. JAKE JIMENEZ says:

WHY ON EARTH SHOULD MARFARITO BE GIVEN A BREAK. WHAT HE HAS DONE BY JUICING UP HIS WRAPS IS TANTAMOUNT TO FRUSTRATED MURDER. THE FACT THAT IT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED THAT HE IS GUILTY AND SHOULD BE PUT BEHIND BARS FOR AT LEAST 12 YEARS THEN STRIPPED OF ALL HIS WINNING RECORDS/TITLES OR WHAT HAVE YOU IN BOXING.

  18. Bay Area says:

That’s right Line up all the fighters that Mayweather did not want to fight! It will force Floyd to really step up and fight other boxers in his weight. Manny will just keep trying to box all of them even if he loses.

  19. perry ayos says:

The writer has a good point. But in my own opinion, Pacquiao should not be criticized be judged negatively if ever he fights Margarito. It is not his fault, has nothing to do with it and he fights whoever is place in front of him by his promoter. We have to remember that Pacquiao is fan and honor-oriented. Although he is top of the world, Pacquiao is in no position to judge Margarito.

  20. yesterday i lied says:

This just a stab at Floyd’s character i believe, Arum is lining up fighters who Floyd ducked

  21. ganiRends says:

Margarito could go back fighting and face Manny with his naturally loaded gloves. I hope that Tony could come back after Mannys win over Clottey..this would be another big challenge for a much, much smaller man.

  22. Will from Sydney says:

We are playing with people’s lives here!!!…Margarito shouldn’t be allowed back to the game…He should be banned for life…hypocracy aside, and Pac should not entertain a fight against him if he even get his licence back

  23. MarQ says:

I am not sold on the issue of having a plaster like hand wraps during a fight.

Have you ever tried putting a hard object on top of your knuckle and using that to punch?

We have to know that the primary reason why there is a hand wrap is to protect the knuckles from breaking or being hurt.

Yes, you can hurt the other fighter but in the same way, having a hard as stone hand wrap will hurt your hands and probably break your fingers/knuckles when you connect with a solid punch to the head.

  24. john says:

if margarito is so bad, then he should have gone to jail.

but he was only suspended, not even banned-for-life, which suggests that he was not that bad. that whatever shortcoming he had can still be given a second chance.

if he gets his license back, people should back-off and him him a break. having a morbid opinion is not the same as really knowing the truth.
